There are so many different things we could focus our prayers on this week. With the news that came out of Washington D.C. please pray for the safety of our churches and our priests. I thought about sending the St. Michael Prayer this week, but we just prayed that back in September. The Feast of St. Irenaeus is Tuesday, and as a Doctor of the Church and the primary source of what we know about the early church, he could also offer plenty to pray about. However, I’m not going down either of those paths.
There is a wealth of Votive Masses, special Feasts and other “devotional” Masses, part of the immense treasury of the Church, that can teach us so much! One such liturgy is the Feast of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, to be celebrated on the Thursday of the octave of the Sacred Heart (this year June 30). In the beginning of this three-year national focus on the Eucharist, let’s start from there.
The priests we are praying for in the Diocese of Rochester this week, and the bishops we are praying for in the United States, are:
|SUNDAY 6/26||Fr. William Moorby||Bp. Michael G. McGovern|
|MONDAY 6/27||Redemptorist Frs. & Brs.||Bp. Patrick McGrath|
San Jose CA
|TUESDAY 6/28||Fr. Malachy Nwosu||Bp. John J. McIntyre Philadelphia PA|
|WEDNESDAY 6/29||Fr. B. Nathan Davis||Bp. W. Shawn McKnight|
Jefferson City MO
|THURSDAY 6/30||Fr. Hoan Dinh||Bp. Robert J. McManus|
|FRIDAY 7/1||Vocations & Seminarians||Bp. William F. Medley|
|SATURDAY 7/2||Bishop Salvatore Matano||Bp. Dale J. Melczek|
Our prayer this week is adapted from the Collect from the Mass for the Feast of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, and words by Pope Benedict XV when instituting the Feast:
Precious Jesus, the chief reason for this Feast of Your Eucharistic Heart is to commemorate our love of You in the mystery of the Eucharist. Encourage our priests to more and more to excite us, the faithful, to approach this sacred mystery with confidence. Inflame their hearts with that divine charity which consumed Your Sacred Heart when in Your infinite love You instituted the most Holy Eucharist, wherein Your Divine Heart guards and loves them by living with them, as they live and abide in You. For in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist You offer and give Yourself to them and us as victim, companion, nourishment, viaticum, and pledge of our future glory.
O Lord Jesus Christ, who has poured forth the riches of Thy love for men in instituting the Sacrament of the Eucharist, help our priests, we beseech Thee, to love Thy most loving Heart and ever make worthy use of so great a Sacrament: Who livest and reignest with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen
